PART 1 : LECTURE

absolute value of a number means the distance (positive) from zero to that number. along the number line. the distance is always positive.

example 1: solve | x | = 5
we need to find the values of x that will cause the statement to be true. For what numbers of x , on the number line, the distance from zero is 5 ?
x = -5 and x = 5

We now can replace x by another expression

example2: | 4x - 5| = 15

example 3: | 2x +4 | = 6
you need to isolate the absolute value first

example4: | x | < 5

example5: |x| >= 5 (use "or" )

example6: | x + 3 | <= 6

example7: | 4x - 5 | > 13 (use "or")

3) |x|= -7

4) 2 |x| + 5 = 9

5) | x - 2 | = 3

6) | x| < 4

7) |x | > = 4

8) | 3x - 2 | < 4

10) | 8 - 4x | <= 5
